With the BWF World Championships on in New Delhi this month, we've had a steady stream of customers at our Siddhapudur and Saravanampatti stores asking the same question after watching the pros play: "What tension should I string my racket at?" Usually they've just seen a highlight reel of someone smashing at 30 lbs and want the same. Here's the honest answer, without the marketing gloss.
Tension is not a power setting
This is the biggest misconception we deal with across the counter. Players assume higher tension means more power, the way turning up a volume knob gets you more sound. It's actually closer to the opposite. Loosely strung strings act like a trampoline — the shuttle presses into the bed on impact and springs back out, and that spring effect adds free power to your shot. String tighter, and that trampoline effect shrinks. The bed goes flatter and stiffer, so less energy comes back from the strings and more has to come from your own swing.
What tighter stringing does give you is control. A stiffer string bed deforms less on contact, so the shuttle comes off at a more consistent, predictable angle. That's why you see high tensions among fast, technical players who need precision on tight net shots and flat drives — not because tension makes them hit harder, but because it lets them place the shuttle exactly where they intend to, shot after shot.
So what tension should you actually use?
This depends entirely on your swing speed and how long you've been playing, not on what your favourite player uses.
Beginners and casual players (18–21 lbs): At this stage your swing speed is still developing, so you want the string bed doing some of the work for you. Lower tension gives you a bigger sweet spot and more forgiveness on off-centre hits, which matters when you're still learning to time the shuttle consistently.
Intermediate and regular club players (22–24 lbs): This is where most of our regular customers in Coimbatore land. You've got a repeatable swing and want a bit more control on net play and drives without giving up too much easy power on the smash.
Advanced and competitive players (25–27 lbs): By this point your swing speed is generating plenty of power on its own, so the priority shifts to control, flat trajectory, and being able to change shot angle late — exactly what a tighter, stiffer bed rewards.
Elite and professional level (28 lbs and above): This is genuinely demanding territory. It requires a fast, technically sound swing to get any real pace out of the racket, and most players who ask us to string this high because a pro does it end up with a dead-feeling racket that makes them work harder for less.
Your racket's tension limit matters too
Every racket frame has a maximum recommended tension printed near the throat or on the specs sheet — usually somewhere between 24 and 28 lbs for most Yonex and Victor frames. Stringing beyond that limit puts real stress on the frame and increases the risk of a crack, especially around the T-joint. If you're not sure what your racket is rated for, bring it into either of our stores and we'll check before we string it.
String type changes the equation too
Tension doesn't work in isolation — the string itself matters just as much. A thinner gauge string like Yonex BG65 or Victor VBS-63 gives more repulsion and a bigger sweet spot at any given tension, good for players who want easy power. A thicker, more durable string like Yonex BG80 Power trades a little of that repulsion for durability and a firmer, more controlled feel — which is why you'll see it paired with higher tensions among players who prioritise precision over racket-head speed.
Our honest recommendation
If you're not sure where you fall, string on the lower end of your bracket rather than the higher end. It's much easier to notice you want more control and go up 1–2 lbs next restring than it is to fight a string bed that's too stiff for your current swing speed. And restring more often than you think you need to — strings lose tension gradually with every hit, so a racket that felt right a month ago is quietly playing 2–3 lbs looser today, especially with regular play.
This is exactly why we offer free string tension consulting alongside our stringing service at both stores. Rather than just stringing whatever number a customer walks in asking for, we'll talk through how you actually play — your swing speed, how often you play, what shots you rely on — and recommend a tension that suits your game, not just your favourite player's. We string in-house at both our Siddhapudur and Saravanampatti stores while you wait, and a lot of players walk in wanting 28 lbs and walk out genuinely happier at 23.
